Based on Tennessee Williams' play of the same name, the story takes place on a hot summer day in Alabama. Brick Pollitt (Paul Newman) and his older brother Gooper (Jack Carson) visit their father for his sixty-fifth birthday. When a rumor surfaces that their father, "Big Daddy" Pollitt (Burl Ives) has cancer; Gooper and his wife Mae(Madeleine Sherwood) plot to win over "Big Daddy" knowing that he does not have much time left and has to think of altering his will. Brick's wife Maggie (Elisabeth Taylor), who can see what Gooper and Mae are doing, tries to console her husband as he grieves the lost of his friend.
