Daniel Day-LewisThree-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting.

The film industry was in shock as the news broke Tuesday with a statement from his spokesperson: "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on the subject."

The 60-year-old veteran is known for playing gang leaders, presidents and writers, with a career spanning over four decades. He has one last untitled film set in the world of high fashion, which will reunite him with director Paul Thomas Anderson. The film is slated for release on December 25, 2017.

Daniel is known for bringing versatility to his performances and going the extra mile, often staying in character between takes. The method actor has impressed critics and audiences alike and is very selective of the roles he chooses. His films have grossed over $981 million at the box office.

Daniel took home an Academy Award for his stunning work in There Will Be Blood, for his performance as writer and artist Christy Brown in My Left Foot, and most recently, for his amazing portrayal of U.S. president Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.

In 2012, Time magazine named him with the "World's Greatest Actor." ~Marriska Fernandes

    If you're a true artist, you can't truly stop your passion. If he loves acting that much, he'll be back someday.

    u never really quit it in your blood, I think stepping aside would be more the right thing to do or say but if their was a film of his dreams to tempting to pass like example if he was a star wars fan and got a role in the saga he probably would do it, remember he retired once before then came back

    Probably just saying it to get attention. Like...from us! I like the 'illness' comment. If it is not, am sure he will be back. But...you never know! My comment is not much of a comment. Lol.Is lol still used? I guess it is here.Haha!

    Gina Davis also announced she was retiring from acting a few years ago and I see she's back again. They like to just take a rest from it for awhile. It's all about publicity.

    Lewis was an Icon in his many roles, some of the difficult character roles he played, took more then acting, it was uncanny the way he always brought the true personality of the bad guy to life on the screen. He will be missed.
