Director Cary Fukunaga accused of inappropriate advances Published By Alexandra Heilbron on May 11, 2022

Photo by Michele K. Short / NetflixNo Time to Die director Cary Fukunaga, also known as Cary Joji Fukunaga, has been accused of inappropriate sexual advances by several young women.

The women began coming forward after Fukunaga posted an Instagram story about the U.S. Supreme Court possibly overturning Roe v. Wade, which read: "Meanwhile in America the supreme court is about to push us one step closer to war with ourselves by legitimatizing a war against women’s rights."

Actress Rachel Vinberg, 23, who played Camille on the HBO Max series Betty, responded, "It pisses me off cause he literally doesn’t care about women. He only traumatizes them. I’ve spoken to many girls. F— you Cary."

She went on to claim that the director, who is 44, began pressuring her into a romantic relationship just after she turned 18. Vinberg posted a selfie taken with him, writing, "I spent many years scared of him. Mans is a groomer and has been doin this shit for years. Beware women." In a series of videos posted on her Instagram story, she said that while they were together, he didn't want anyone to know about their relationship because "it would look bad for him. He’d like tell me to pretend I was his cousin, or niece, or sister in front of other people." Vinberg, who broke off the relationship when she turned 21, alleges that people in Fukunaga's circle know what he's been up to, saying, "There are plenty of people that work for him that know that he’s a predator and they all talk about it amongst themselves behind his back. They all know, but they don’t do anything."

Her posts encouraged twin actresses Hannah and Cailin Loesch, who appeared on Fukunaga's Netflix mini-series Maniac, to come forward. They said the director pursued them both from the time they were 20. He invited them to London while he was filming No Time to Die, then showed up at their family's home. During his stay, while the three of them were in a hot tub, Fukunaga asked if they were virgins and whether they’d ever participate in a threesome. The last straw came when they visited his New York City penthouse to watch a final cut of No Time to Die on his laptop, which hadn't been released to theaters yet. When the movie ended, they said "he grabbed and pulled her on top of him, Hannah still right there." The episode "terrified" Cailin. Even though the twins refused to have sex with him, they said the director didn't give up, and "invited us both to ‘drop acid’ and do molly at his house upstate that weekend."

Last fall, Fukunaga was accused of firing 25-year-old actress Raeden Greer while shooting the first season of HBO’s True Detective because she refused to appear topless on camera.

A rep for Fukunaga declined to comment. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Why is it that whenever men get power, they become predators?

That last one, about Raeden Greer... who cares. That's part of the business - if you're not a big name or producing the project, yet refuse to do what the director is requesting of you, he has every right to fire you. It's more about her going for and taking an acting job she wasn't suitable for than anything else... Of the two other claims, though, the only one I found genuinely problematic was the one about the Loeschs- Fukunaga truly tried way too hard to turn his Coors Light fantasies into reality, so I got zero issues with the young women calling him out here. However, 'not too sure about Vinberg, - kinda sounds more like an ex having sour grapes about a bad relationship than anything else. Sure, he was way too old for her, but, then again, she did admit they started dating when she was 18, right? Well then, nothing illegal to speak about here. In any case, in this post-Amber Turd world we're all living in right now, it goes without saying that EVIDENCES trumps HEARSAYS every single time... I refuse to believe all women - I will only believe what they can prove, period.

Do not believe all women or hearsays... believe evidences. 'Got two words if you disagree with this: Amber Heard. 'Nuff said.

WEINSTEIN!!! Regardless of your age everyone has heard about him by now. If you are involved in such a situation go tell police, bestie, female relatives even grandmothers will fight for you and help you. But you must speak out when it happens. Don’t wait 20, 40 years as he said/she said gets hard to prove in court and a bunch of people coming out then makes me wonder if it happened or someone needing some attention and wanting to get back in the limelight. One time and go nail his ass to the wall. Don’t keep going back and putting yourself in those situations or I would start looking at you wanting the attention. So talk to someone immediately- preferably the police

@MightyMad - wow such salty judgement on nothing you know about, while unironically crying about proof. Please crawl back to whatever basement world that sees grooming and abuse of power as some sort of cringey “Coors Light” fantasy. The 18yr old girl must just be bitter right??

I hate to be the one to say they were asking for it but honestly. The twins kept going back after the first proposition. They knew full and well he was a creep. @Angela There are plenty of powerful men out there that aren't predators. @Friday13th MightyMad is right. Women are just as capable of lying as men are. Innocent until proven guilty applies to everyone.

I hope that for every man who writes something negative the same thing happens to their daughter, sister, girlfriend, wife, mother whatever. And then they can give that same speech to them. Well I'm not sure it happened. Oh it's sour grapes. Basically telling them they're lying. That's the only way they will learn.
  • Pat - 5/14/2022 4:13:04 AM
@Jona You're actually hoping that women and girls get assaulted because that's "the only way" men will learn? Wow. You're wrong. And you're sick.

Not seeing anything criminal here. Just a creepy guy. He is certainly putting his intentions up front regarding what he wants. I didn’t see a gun in the story. Vinberg went out with him for 3 years and probably didn’t get the part she was hoping for. Is she related to Amber Heard. “Heard” that story before. Watch out women! If you are going to trash men in the media after you are unsuccessful climbing that accomplished male ladder, you might find yourself in Virginia court. How about being a big girl and work hard on your own to become successful. That’s true equality. Just saying.
