The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sunday night, handing out awards to the best in television. The Handmaid's Tale took home the big awards of the night, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, which went to Elisabeth Moss.
HBO's Big Little Lies also swept up several of the awards. Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée won Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, while Nicole Kidman won her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. Laura Dern took home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series while Alexander Skarsgård picked up the Supporting Actor award. The show, which was filmed in Monterey, California, also won Outstanding Limited Series.
When accepting her Emmy, Nicole shed light on domestic abuse, which was a significant aspect of her story on the series, saying: "It is a complicated, insidious disease. It exists far more than we allow ourselves to know. It is filled with shame and secrecy. And by you acknowledging me with this award it shines a light on it even more."
Host Stephen Colbert's opening monologue was targeted at President Trump, who once complained he never won an Emmy, and the evening followed with several political digs. When Alec Baldwin won for his appearance on Saturday Night Live, he said: "I suppose I should say, At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy."
