Free Guy goes for two for two to top weekend box office Published By Tribute on Aug 22, 2021

Free Guy starring Ryan ReynoldsWith as many as four new wide releases to contend with, Disney and 20th Century Fox's action comedy Free Guy just barely managed to edge out the competition. With a manageable 50 percent drop at the box office, the Ryan Reynolds-starring flick brought in a solid $18.8 million. That figure brings up its 10-day domestic total to just over $58.8 million, putting it on pace to be one of the summer's bigger hits.

Finding itself in a second place debut is the animated film PAW Patrol: The Movie. The first theatrical film for the hit children's show debuted to an impressive $13 million this past weekend, putting it in similar territory as the Tom & Jerry movie, which released earlier this year.

Staying steady at third was Disney's action adventure film, Jungle Cruise. The Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt-fronted film saw just a minor 32 percent drop in its fourth weekend of release with a take of $6.2 milion. In spite of its simultaneous release on Disney+ the film continues to do well, as its 24-day total now stands at just under $92.5 million. At its current pace, the film is set to cross the $100 million threshold in the coming weeks.

Holding steady at fourth was Sony's thriller sequel, Don't Breathe 2. The Stephen Lang-led film saw a second weekend take of $5 million to help bring up its 10-day total to over $19.6 million.

Lastly, a number of films fought it out for the remaining spot in the top five. Newcomers The Night House and The Protégé each came within close range of each other, but it was the Aretha Franklin musical biopic Respect that won out in the end. A solid A Cinema Score showed that the film was a hit with its target audience, contributing to its weekend gross of $3.8 million. The film's 10-day total now stands at over $15.7 million. ~Paolo Maquiraya
