The 78th Golden Globe Awards were held on Sunday night (Feb. 28), honoring the best in movies and television. Due to the pandemic, this year's awards ceremony took place both virtually and in-person as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted this year’s ceremony from New York and Los Angeles, respectively.

Nomadland took the top honors, winning Best Picture (drama) and Best Director for Chloé Zhao (pictured above). She made history as she became the first woman of Asian descent and second woman ever to win the best director award in the 78-year history of the Golden Globes. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm won Best Picture in the musical/comedy category, and even earned Sacha Baron Cohen the Best Actor award.

There were some surprising wins, with Rosamund Pike winning Best Actress in comedy/musical for her work in I Care A Lot, Andra Day won Best Actress in drama for The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Jodie Foster earned Best Supporting Actress for The Mauritanian.

The late Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous award for Best Actor for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward gave a beautiful, heartfelt speech as she accepted the award on his behalf. She said: "He would thank God. He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors. He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that amplifies that little voice inside of all of us.” She added tearfully: "I don’t have his words, but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love."

The cutest moment of the show was when Minari won for Best Foreign Language Film. When the camera cut to director Lee Isaac Chung for his acceptance speech, his seven-year-old daughter jumped and hugged her dad, saying, "I prayed! I prayed!" Chung thanked his team, his wife who he said was "hiding over there," and he thanked his daughter who was still clinging to him.

He said: "She's the reason I made this film. I just want to say that Minari is about a family. It's a family trying to learn how to speak a language of its own. It goes deeper than any American language and any foreign language. It's a language of the heart, and I'm trying to learn it myself and to pass it on, and I hope we'll all learn how to speak this language of love to each other, especially this year. God bless you all, and thank you." Click here to read our review of Minari.

Aaron Sorkin earned the award for Best Screenplay for The Trial of the Chicago 7 and in his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to the three women who were nominated for best director. "You are the reason my college-age daughter wants to be a filmmaker, and I'm never going to forgive you for that," he joked.

On the television side, Netflix’s The Crown won four awards including Best Drama, Schitt’s Creek won for Best Comedy, and The Queen's Gambit won Best Limited Series.

The Golden Globes has been in hot water recently after the revelation that there are no Black journalists among the 87 members who vote for the awards. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made a statement during the ceremony, asking for a change: "Everyone is upset with the HFPA and their choices. Look, a lot of flashy garbage got nominated, but that happens. That is their thing. But a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked. But even with stupid things, inclusivity is important. There’s no Black members of the HFPA. You have to change that."

The HFPA used the broadcast to issue a statement, announcing their plans to include more Black journalists in their organization. Helen Hoehne, vice president of the HFPA said, "Tonight while we celebrate the work of artists from around the globe, we recognize we have our own work to do. Like in film and television, Black representation is vital. We must have Black journalists in our organization."
