Moviegoers flocked to theaters this weekend for some deadly scares as Pennywise returned in IT: Chapter Two. The film topped the box office with a monstrous $91 million, making it the highest-grossing opening for an R-rated film this year and the second biggest September debut of all time. It's also the second biggest opening for a horror movie ever, behind the original IT in 2017, which brought in a record-breaking $123 million during its debut weekend. Angel Has Fallen, the reigning box office champ for the last two weeks, fell one spot in its third weekend. The third movie in the Fallen trilogy earned an additional $6 million for a total of $53.5 million.
Good Boys is still being enjoyed by moviegoers, dropping one spot to land in third. The raunchy comedy gained an additional $5.4 million for a domestic haul of $66.8 million.
The Lion King has been a roaring success at the box office, now in its eighth weekend on the top five chart. The Disney film took the fourth spot, earning an additional $4.2 million for a domestic total of $529.1 million.
Climbing back up a spot to round out the top five was the faith drama Overcomer, earning an additional $3.8 million in its third weekend for a domestic gross of $24.7 million. ~Marriska Fernandes
