Monster Hunter movie posterA new movie topped the weekend box office for the first time in three weeks... and no doubt the box office will change again next week with two big Hollywood films opening on Christmas Day. This weekend, things were looking a little brighter than they had been as Christmas approaches -- two films earned in the millions over the weekend. The new sci-fi action flick Monster Hunter starring Milla Jovovich took over the top spot at the box office this weekend, debuting with earnings of $2.2 million.

The animated comedy The Croods: A New Age, featuring the voices of Nicolas CageCatherine Keener and Emma Stone dropped a spot to second, earning an additional $2 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $27 million.

Despite playing in only 1,107 locations, the new thriller, Fatale, starring Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy, debuted in third place with a take of $925,000.

The classic movie Elf starring Will Ferrell, which was re-released for the holiday season, took fourth place with $365,000 for a total of $1.9 million during the pandemic.

Rounding out the top five was Half Brothers, a comedy/drama about two brothers who go on a road trip. It dropped three spots, taking in an extra $260,000 for a total of $1.8 million. ~Alexandra Heilbron
