Princess Diana role cast in new season of The Crown Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Apr 10, 2019

Emma Corrin headshotAfter Netflix launched an extensive search last month for an actress to play Princess Diana in the fourth season of their hit series The Crown, they announced yesterday the role has been cast.

The casting notice that went out read: "We need a mesmerizing new young star with extraordinary range. She has to play charming comedy, flirt and social exhibitionist on the world stage, desperate and lonely self-harmer at her lowest ebb and the kind of psychological intensity of Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby."

Newcomer Emma Corrin, who appeared on one episode of the British TV series Grantchester earlier this year, has been chosen. She has also filmed a role in the feature film Misbehaviour alongside Keira Knightley, which does not yet have a release date.

The Crown creator Peter Morgan said Tuesday in a statement: "Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer. As well as having the innocence and beauty of a young Diana, she also has, in abundance, the range and complexity to portray an extraordinary woman who went from anonymous teenager to becoming the most iconic woman of her generation."

Corrin commented, "Beyond excited and honored to be joining The Crown for its fourth season. I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal. Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. To be given the chance to explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice!"

The show is known for casting unknown actors -- Claire Foy found fame after being cast in the role of young Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons, while Vanessa Kirby, who played her sister, Princess Margaret, has gone on to starring roles in major motion pictures such as Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The third season of the popular series, which is set to debut in late 2019 on Netflix, jumps ahead several years to an older Elizabeth, played by Olivia Colman. The fourth season will begin filming later this year. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Claire Foy was hardly an unknown before starring in The Crown. She’s been in many projects in the UK and have always been an incredible talent. Same goes for Olivia Colman. Just glad that they are getting acknowledgement across the pond!
