Sinead O'Connor's shocking tale of abuse in torture chamber Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Sep 14, 2017

Sinead O'Connor on Dr. Phil showTroubled singer Sinead O'Connor appeared on Dr. Phil's TV show this week, where she admitted her mother, Marie O'Connor, "ran a torture chamber."

She continued, "It was a torture chamber. She was a person who took delight, would smile in hurting you." Sinead revealed that her mother abused her from the time she was a toddler until she was in her teens.

"My earliest memory, she's telling me I shouldn’t have been born. She didn’t want me," the Irish singer recalled. “She didn’t want girls. She wanted me to be a boy. She [dressed] me like a boy, she chops my hair off. Whenever she beats me, which is daily, I'm naked. She makes me take my clothes off. I have to lie on the floor. I have to open my arms and legs. I have to let her attack my abdomen. She wants to burst my womb. She wants to destroy my reproductive system. She wants to stop me from being a female."

She added that Marie hit not only her, but also her siblings with hockey sticks and tennis rackets, and added that she was also sexually abused as a child.

Sinead said the abuse stopped when she was 14, and had grown to be the same size as her mother. She rationalized her mother's actions, saying, “She was not well. She was really very, very, very not well. I would say she was possessed, although, I’m not sure I believe in such things. So either she was just a sadist and a pedophile or she was possessed by the devil.”

Marie died in a car crash when Sinead was 19. Two years later, Sinead had the number one single in the world with "Nothing Compares 2U." Over the years, Sinead has shown signs of being emotionally unstable, including posting a video in which she said she was suicidal, begging her family for help.

She told Dr. Phil this week, “I am fed up of being defined as the crazy person; the child abuse survivor.” He responded by saying that he'd contacted David Foster, who stated he would be very happy to work with Sinead on a new song.

This is so sad. When children are abused and/or neglected by one or more parents, it scars them for life. They don't know how to have healthy relationships. They don't know how to love. The saddest thing is that she cries because she misses her abuser (her mother), and says she can't wait to see her in the afterlife, but also says she's glad her mother is dead.

I hope that people will remember again that someone usually knows when abuse is occurring, and that people will speak out. I became aware that a friend and neighbor was abusing someone else's child and I can tell you that I called the police and social services from a payphone so my identity would not be revealed. I literally could not sleep at night knowing this little fellow was crying all day, in the dark. Something happened immediately! Im glad to this day I did it. There are many forms of abuse. Sinead's was horriffic. Im really disturbed hearing it. Awful!!

Shes on a healing path now. Shes talking about it and thats the first step which is huge, i hope she gets the help she needs to move on. The memory is and will always be there, but she'll learn to cope better when she gets help. Good luck on your journey

I too had a horrific childhood! I'm so glad that she is reaching out for help. Forgiveness is a hard thing to do, to forgive the person that did this to you, and to forgive yourself for the way you feel, and for some of the same traits that you may have taken on, of the person that did these things to you. I hope that you can stop blaming yourself, and head into a wonderful new light. God bless

Children of abuse suffer a lifetime. Even though Dr. Phil is not a bonafide Dr. he has tried to help many people who need it and obviously Sinead feels comfortable divulging her childhood ordeal. I do agree that a formalized assessment with a psychologist would help her immeasurably.

Those who judge, shall be judged. I don't believe much in the bible but that quote says it all. We don't know what others go through or the reality they live or have lived. Be kind.

Hello Sinead. I had a childhood much like yours. I went to therapy, pretty much to no avail. In my fifties I studied psychology in grad school. This is where my healing began. No child, or adult child wants to think h/his parent is evil. Mine was. I believe, since beginning a conversation 2 years ago with her last surviving sibling, that she became demonic during early childhood, or even toddler or infancy from a result of both witnessing and receiving abused from her parents (even if only one carries it out, the other is at fault for not stopping it, by any means necessary). My understanding is that at the age children begin to develop personality they often think in terms of black and white, good and evil, without any real understanding of either. Thank you for your wonderful music, and best of luck to you.
