Another Star Wars franchise film has lost its director. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who was slated to helm the much-anticipated Star Wars: Episode IX, has vacated the director's chair after what was reported to be creative differences with film execs over the script.
Disney released a statement today (Sept. 6) announcing the split: "Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process, but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon."
You'll notice no new director is named, but an update will likely come swiftly once one is found, as Star Wars fans might be in a panic over the news.
This isn't the first time a Star Wars film was left in limbo over the loss of a director -- in June the new Han Solo prequel lost directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller to creative differences. Acclaimed director Ron Howard quickly took over, though, much to the delight (and relief) of fans.
Colin and his writing partner, Derek Connolly, had drafted the script for Episode IX, then Disney brought in screenwriter Jack Thorne to polish it up. It's been speculated that changes in the rewrite fueled the creative differences.
Star Wars: Episode IX is due for release on May 24, 2019, but with this news, there's a possibility the film may hit theaters at a later date.
