The Secret Life of Pets 2 tops the weekend box office Published By Tribute on Jun 09, 2019

The Secret Life of Pets 2 movie posterJune's newcomers faced stiff competition from strong May holdovers at this weekend's box office.

In spite of a crowded field to start the month of June, Illumination Entertainment's animated sequel The Secret Life of Pets 2 came out on top at the box office. The film debuted to the tune of $47.1 million to lead the way. Its opening figure is less than half of what the original opened to back in 2016 ($104 million), thanks in no part to having to compete for family audiences with Disney's Aladdin.

Debuting at number two was Twentieth Century Fox's finale to their X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix. The final chapter in the saga opened up to a franchise low $33 million at the box office. Dark Phoenix is the first X-Men film to debut with lower than $50 million at the box office, facing competition from May holdovers.

Dropping to third was last week's number two film, Aladdin. Disney's live-action remake of their animated classic continues to perform strongly at the box office, bringing in an additional $24.5 million this past weekend. The film's 17-day domestic total now stands at over $232 million and is on pace to surpass both 2013's Oz The Great and Powerful and 2014's Maleficent to become the fourth highest-grossing film in Disney's line of live-action re-imaginings.

Falling to fourth was last week's top film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In its second weekend at the box office the giant monster flick managed to bring in just over $15.5 million. Its weekend gross now pushes its 10-day domestic total to $78.6 million as the film aims to cross the $100 million threshold.

Rounding out the top five was the Elton John musical biopic Rocketman. The film held strong in its second weekend at the box office, suffering just a slight 38 percent drop, resulting in a solid $14 million take. The R-rated film's 10-day domestic total now stands at a respectable $50.5 million, easily surpassing its modest $40 million production budget. ~Paolo Maquiraya
