The setting on Coney Island, I believe, was totally original and effective. Incorporating flame throwers and sword swallowers, she-males, midgets... a circus support team added another dimension. And somehow, this all worked spectacularly well with Mozart's opera, apparently first performed in 1790!! The singing, performing and staging were all extremely well-integrated. The opera singers held their characters from beginning to end even when they were not the ones singing. This was truly an amazing and delightful performance. And Joyce Didonato(sp?) doing the entre-acte interviews and commentaries added another nice touch. Bravo to all!!
