Synopsis

Deeply conservative spinster Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) makes friends with her rowdy Irish neighbor, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When they have a falling out, Edith begins to receive letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, which her angry father assumes must have come from free-spirited, but foul-mouthed Rose.

He brings the poison pen letters to the attention of the police of the small seaside town, who charge Rose with the crime. When other members of the town begin to receive anonymous letters with profanities, it prompts an uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women — led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) — investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is not quite right, and that Rose may not be the culprit after all.
