Andrew Garfield is willing to go to great lengths -- and seriously slim down -- for his film roles.
The 33-year-old actor shed an astonishing 40 pounds in preparation for his work in the upcoming drama Silence, directed by Martin Scorsese. Both Andrew and co-star Adam Driver dropped weight to play 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit priests determined to locate their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) in Japan.
The Amazing Spider-Man chatted with E! about his part in the prestige picture, specifically touching on his physical transformation.
He said, "It's not fun. But ultimately [it's] very, very satisfying and fulfilling. You learn a lot of information from emptying out."
Andrew added that it was necessary for him and Adam to trim down because "it's the truth of what these guys would have gone through."
The actor, who recently snagged a Golden Globe nomination for his work in Hacksaw Ridge, also discussed a silent retreat that he and Adam embarked on in Wales prior to shooting the film.
He said, "It's a wonderful thing. Just after about three days everything shifts. Your central nervous system just kind of settles down and it becomes normal."
Revealing more details about the trip, he said, "You go into all these meditation and prayer rooms and the quiet there is the loudest thing you've ever f***ing heard. It's crazy. You literally go in there and your ears start ringing. It's the purest silence that you could know. I've done a few of these things in the past on my personal time. I love all this spiritual exploration stuff. I'm fascinated by it."
You can catch Andrew and his emaciated frame in action when Silence hits theaters on Jan. 6, 2017.
