Academy Awards 2023 live updates and winners list! Published By Alexandra Heilbron on Mar 13, 2023

The 95th Oscars hosted by Jimmy Kimmel
The 95th Academy Awards began with host Jimmy Kimmel parachuting down onto the stage. He pointed out that last year was the first year audiences were able to go to cinemas and see movies as they're meant to be seen -- on the big screen. He referenced the Will Smith incident from last year's Oscars ceremony several times, quipping, "If anyone commits any act of violence, you will be awarded Best Actor." While introducing the presenters for Best Documentary, he reminded the audience that it was during the presentation of this award that the skirmish last year occured, but he was certain that this year it would go off without a hitch. Or at least, "without Hitch," in a reference to Smith's 2005 movie, in which he played the title role.

Kimmel joked that because we lost an hour to Daylight Savings Time today, they added that hour to the show. Also, all categories would be announced this year, so he predicted the ceremony would be long.

The first Oscar went to Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio for Best Animated Feature.

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once, who, having started out as a child actor, believed his acting career was over when he grew up, so he urged people to never give up on their dreams. The Best Supporting Actress winner was Ke's co-star Jamie Lee Curtis, also a first-time nominee. The two hugged backstage, both of them crying tears of joy. Later in the evening, their co-star Michelle Yeoh, a first-time nominee as well, won for Best Actress.

Elizabeth Banks tripped walking across the stage to present the award for Visual Effects (which went to Avatar: The Way of Water) and joked that the "bear" who joined her tripped her (he was nowhere near her at the time). She was one of the funniest presenters, riffing about the comedy film Cocaine Bear, which she directed.

Canadian Sarah Polley won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for her incredible film Women Talking -- which was also nominated for Best Picture. Fellow Canadian Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for his performance in The Whale.

The German film All Quiet on the Western Front won four Oscars in total, in the Cinematography, Production Design, Original Score and Best International Film categories.

John Travolta gave a touching intro for the In Memoriam video, which included his former co-stars, Olivia Newton-John and Kirstie Alley. Prior to the intro, Kimmel joked about whether or not people would want Robert Blake to be included, and in a controversial move on the part of the Academy, he wasn't. Blake was charged with the murder of his wife in 2002 -- but was later acquitted. Also missing from the In Memoriam video were Anne Heche, Paul Sorvino and Leslie Jordan.

The final award of the night -- Best Picture -- was presented by Harrison Ford. It went to Everything Everywhere All at Once, bringing its total up to seven awards out of 11 nominations, making it the winner of the most Oscars of the night. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Happy to see both Brendan Fraser & Sarah Polley win! (Was also routing for Austin Butler, but this is a good win). Canada was well represented this year. And although I am not a big fan of Jimmy Kimmel, I think he did a good job.

The show was kind of boring, except for Lady Gaga's song. Austin Butler was robbed of an Oscar, and Jimmy Kimmel's tasteless joke about Robert Blake was appalling. I loved Robert in Baretta and the In memoriam video should be based on a person's career, not their personal life. He was found not guilty of the murder, he was in the restaurant when it happened and the gun he was carrying was tested, it was not the murder weapon. I'm hoping that he's included next year, Robert acted from the time he was a very small kid in the Little Rascals videos and a movie with Humphrey Bogart and was still entertaining people as an adult. I think part of the Baretta theme song was don't do the crime if you can't do the time. I don't think he did the crime and since he was found not guilty, he should not continue to be punished.
