Wiping out all competition for the second weekend in a row was Disney’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The final installment in the Skywalker Saga brought in $72 million this weekend alone, and achieved the second-highest Christmas Day gross of all time with $32 million, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $49.3 million on Christmas Day in 2015. In addition, the film had the third largest December opening of all time last weekend and continues to break records as it heads into its third week at the box office.
Jumanji: The Next Level remained in second place for the second weekend in a row. Earning nearly half the domestic gross of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the film hauled in a solid $35.3 million for a domestic total of $175.5 million.
Debuting in third was Sony’s film Little Women, which opened on Christmas Day with an impressive $6.4 million. The historical film earned an additional $16.5 million in its first weekend at the box office, for a total of $29 million.
Frozen II dropped to fourth place, earning $16.5 million during its sixth weekend at the box office for a domestic haul of $421.3 million. The film has earned the third spot in the highest-grossing animated releases of all time with a total of $1.2 billion worldwide and continues to break records.
Rounding out the top five was Spies in Disguise, bringing in $13.2 million in its first full weekend at the box office. The animated film starring the voices of Will Smith and Tom Holland has earned a total of $22.1 million since opening on Christmas Day. ~Emily Chavez
