Synopsis

Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) earns his living reading the world’s news to rapt audiences in the territories of North Texas. After one such reading, a man offers him $50 to get Johanna Leonberger (Helena Zengel), a little girl who was kidnapped years earlier by the Kiowa Indians, and return her to her aunt and uncle, who live outside San Antonio.

Kidd agrees, but the girl, who was rescued by the U.S. Army, doesn't remember anything from her life before the Kiowas. She's resistant to being rescued and wants nothing but to go home to her Kiowa mother and her tribe, who live a nomadic life. As they travel across the dangerous land, Kidd tries to help Johanna, whose English is rusty and who refuses to wear shoes, transition to what will be her new life.

Based on the National Book Award finalist and bestselling novel by Paulette Jiles.
