Netflix viewing redefines rules of TV Published By Marriska Fernandes on May 26, 2017

You might remember the TV schedules you received every week to follow your favorite movies or TV shows, unless you're Gen Z (in which case, I can't even). Netflix members choose their own schedules so now ain't nobody telling us what to see and when.

"For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around," said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content. "We’ve given consumers control and it’s interesting to see the behaviors that emerge when viewers aren’t tied to a schedule. And even more so to see that these routines are replicated by millions the world over."

Comedy for breakfast
Breakfast is king and so is comedy. Viewers prefer to start the day with a Netflix comedy like Fuller House. The Tanners may have originally premiered at 8PM, but today, the Fullers are devoured before 8AM. Some of the companions enjoyed at the breakfast table include Michael Scott (The Office), Kimmy Schmidt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and my favorite, Chandler Bing (Friends), to name a few.

High noon, high drama
At lunch, viewers get down and dirty with drama galore. They prefer to pay a visit to the ladies of Litchfield at lunch or sit at a high-stakes operating table with Meredith Grey. All over the world, drama accounts for nearly half (47%) of viewing between noon and 2PM. And our binge-watchers in Brazil can't get enough of feisty drama as almost 25% are more likely to watch at this time compared to the rest of the world. You go, Brazil! Who says Shameless, Grey’s Anatomy and Orange is the New Black are strictly an evening affair?

Evening thrills for dinner
Thrillers like The Walking Dead, Stranger Things and Breaking Bad are being enjoyed in the evening -- globally, this genre sees an almost 27% increase at 9PM. Viewers then prefer to kick Rick Grimes, the Upside Down and Walter White out of bed by 11PM and reconnect with laughter with the likes of Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation) and Dev Shah (Master of None). Haven't you heard? Those who start the day with a laugh, end the day with a laugh.

Late night pleasure
Globally, 15% of streaming happens between midnight and 6AM. And no, these night owls aren't watching what you think they're watching. According to Netflix surveys, these people prefer learning by watching documentaries (an increase of 24%), including titles like Abstract, Making a Murderer and Planet Earth. Who knew, eh?

In this digital age with Netflix available at any time, day or night, it's easy to fit our TV schedule around our lives. In the words of President Frank Underwood: "If you don’t like how the table is set, turn over the table." Amen to that.

I only watch TV at night, but it's interesting to see that some people watch TV all day long. Get a life folks! Move around, you won't be so fat!
