Amid fears caused by the coronavirus pandemic spreading throughout the world, movie ticket sales plunged to their lowest levels in at least 20 years at North American theaters. But despite one of Hollywood's worst weekends at the box office, Disney/Pixar’s Onward maintained its first place position.
For the second weekend in a row, Onward was the top film, earning an additional $10.5 million - a drop of 73.1% from its opening weekend take. The family friendly film, starring the voice talents of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, has taken in $60.3 million domestically since it opened last weekend.
Charming its way into second place was the biopic I Still Believe, based on the true story of Christian music megastar Jeremy Camp (K.J. Apa) and his relationship with wife Melissa (Britt Robertson). It debuted to the tune of $9.5 million.
Another new release, Bloodshot, debuted in third place. Starring Vin Diesel as an elite soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life with superpowers, it earned $9.3 million in its debut weekend.
Sliding down to fourth spot was The Invisible Man, starring Elisabeth Moss. The well-reviewed thriller made an additional $6 million this weekend, pushing its domestic total to $64.4 million.
Rounding out the top five was The Hunt. The controversial film finally made its debut on Friday, earning $5.3 million over the weekend. Starring Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank, the movie was originally set to release last September, but was postponed after back-to-back mass shootings in the U.S. ~Allison Palmer
