Cheesy and overproduced, the effects were amazing but the story was lackluster. There were a few groaner moments, to be perfectly honest.
It had potential Kinda fell apart and became a little overblown by the end.
Great flic, that totally reminded me of classic Spielberg films from the 80s, like Goonies, Indiana Jones, etc.
This movie is just ok.
This film far exceeded my expectations. A young group of kids hold this movie. I loved how interesting each of the actors personalities were developed, a good surprise is Dakota Fanning's younger sister and her role in this film. Not a typical alien versus man film. A must see!!
Can't go wrong with a Steven Spielberg movie! My whole family really enjoyed this thrilling movie!

More like 3.5 stars. Old school Spielberg at its best, I'm just not sure how relevant that is anymore. Overall, a "cute" movie, but that probably wasn't what he was going for.

anyone who is stating that this is a good movie needs to watch more movies. This movie was pure crap. The story was just boring and lacked any intelligence and just ended up being a cheesy monster movie in the end. How completely lame.
This movie was a huge disappointment. What a complete and utter piece of crap. This is the kind of dribble that 8th graders can write. There was nothing at all impressive about this movie. I was totally mortified that I was the one who suggested to my friends to see this utter piece of crap.
Loved it. The actors are very talented children. Great action, different story line. Cross between Stand By Me and The Goonies. Worth seeing

The movie was great except for 4 things: It was obvious what the thing was, it was too loud, unnecessary swearing, and the ending.

J. J. Abrams' pays homage to Spielberg in this engaging adventure/comedy set in the 70s. Look closely and see elements of Jaws, ET, Indiana Jones, and the Goonies skilfully intertwined as young teens deal with a seemingly-malevolent alien, a government cover-up, and coming-of-age romance. Entertaining and fun for the whole family!
Loved it- the young actors were so right for their roles. The 2 hours flew by, no lulls in the action!
